About Hardwood Directory

Built by a woodworker, for woodworking professionals and hobbyists.

Why This Directory Exists

This directory started the way most useful things do, out of frustration. When I first started woodworking, finding a real hardwood dealer was harder than it should have been. Big-box stores stock pine and construction lumber, not walnut or quartersawn white oak. Google results are cluttered with general contractors and building-supply chains that happen to carry a few boards of red oak. The actual sawmills, the small specialty yards, the places that really understand hardwood, they're out there, but they're scattered, and can be hard to find. If you don't already know a guy, you're stuck.

That's the gap this site is trying to close: a straightforward, no-nonsense way to find hardwood dealers, sawmills, and specialty wood suppliers that actually know what they're doing. It is organized by state, tagged by what they carry, and built by someone who's stood in a lumber yard trying to figure out which of these places is worth the drive.

The Mission

The mission is simple: be a reliable source of quality businesses serving woodworking professionals and hobbyists, and give the small lumber yards and sawmills that rarely show up in a Google search the visibility they've earned. For everything else, from clubs and schools to podcasts and tool talk, there's the woodworker resources page.

If you're a dealer and something on your listing is wrong, or you run a great hardwood business that isn't listed yet, let me know — this only stays useful if it stays accurate.
